How Fly with Bags Orders and Labels Flight Results

This page explains how the current Fly with Bags app orders and labels returned results, where the data comes from, and what a traveller still needs to verify. It is not a claim that every airline, route, fee or fare is covered. In our latest production check, no returned option had a complete offer-bound bag-selected total.

What the ordering can establish

The default price order can put an option with a usable numeric total before an option whose amount is incomplete. That does not make a fare-only amount or a policy allowance note into a complete flight-and-bag quote. The result label is as important as its position.

The current baggage inputs are a small under-seat bag, a larger cabin bag and checked bags. Sports equipment, seat-selection fees, refund flexibility and other ancillary costs are not part of that total. The ranking therefore cannot claim to be the complete cost of every possible trip.

Inputs used

The comparison can use the route, dates, passenger count, returned base fare, requested baggage counts, carrier-published baggage products and the price information supplied for those products. The app also offers airline and quickest-journey sorting. It does not calculate an unpublished “confidence” or “value” score.

Before displaying results, the app groups baggage choices that belong to the same flight. Its code can retain a complete offer-bound total only when the response contains the required explicit information. Inside a flight group, usable numeric totals come before incomplete prices. The latest production check did not supply a complete bag-selected total to exercise that path.

Sources and freshness

Flight availability and fares come from the live comparison provider used by the API. Published baggage evidence is maintained separately from a carrier’s own policy pages and can have reviewed and expiry dates. Coverage varies by airline and product; a source link or review date is evidence of the check that was performed, not a promise that the rule cannot change afterwards.

Google’s own Flights guidance notes that bag-fee displays can vary and tells travellers to check the airline site. The UK Civil Aviation Authority likewise advises checking the allowance for the airline, destination and class. Fly with Bags follows the same final-airline-check rule.

Missing and uncertain data

An incomplete fee is not silently treated as zero. Results can carry warnings or indicate that a total is incomplete when the comparison cannot establish an explicit price. Such an option should not outrank a complete cheaper total just because a missing charge looks like no charge.

The app cannot guarantee that a third-party response includes every flight or fare. Codeshares, mixed-carrier itineraries, membership benefits, route-specific charges and last-minute changes can all limit a direct comparison.

What is excluded

The current ranking does not include:

• sports-equipment, pet or musical-instrument charges;
• seat selection, airport check-in or payment charges;
• hotel, transfer, visa, insurance or disruption costs;
• a prediction of refund eligibility or claim outcome; or
• a subjective score for service, comfort or reliability.

Editorial guides may help a traveller identify those costs, but they are not automatically added to app results.

Worked comparison method

Suppose two returned flights serve the same route. A true like-for-like ranking would require an offer-bound fare and requested-bag amount for each option. Only then could the two totals be compared. If the response supplies policy guidance without that priced offer, the app must not label the bag as priced or included in the total.

If a baggage price is missing, the app describes the total as incomplete rather than assuming zero. The traveller can then follow the airline link, record the live amount in the baggage cost calculator, and decide manually. This fail-closed behaviour is more useful than a precise-looking but unsupported winner.

How to use the result responsibly

Treat the list as a comparison aid, not the contract of carriage. Open the detail for the chosen result, follow the published source where one is present, and check the operating airline’s current dimensions, weight, eligibility and price immediately before payment. The airline’s checkout and conditions remain the final authority.

Updates and corrections
